She is a living legend of the piano. The Portuguese artist (who loves Switzerland, sharing her life between the latter and her country of origin) is coming to Saanen with Schubert, Debussy and Beethoven’s ultimate sonata: the unclassifiable Opus 111. Maria João Pires made her stage debut in 1949, at the age of five, in a Mozart recital. Trained by Karl Engel among others, she has made a name for herself in recent decades through her strong commitment to the next generation of young musicians at the Centre Belgais, which she founded in Portugal, and at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Brussels.

Maravilhosa, como sempre!
What a marvellous artist, the likes of which are hard to find any more. The organic pulsation takes us into a wonderful world, that of Debussy.
Another immortal performance by Maria Pires. The Beethoven is unsurpassable.
My favourite pianist and mentor, beautifully playing one of my favourite programmes.
I wish I could be with her at all times. Concerts, recitals, workshops …..
Such a wonderful and heartfelt performance!
Thank you Gstaad Festival for capturing it so well and sharing it.
